Ciao a tutti at My Italian Circle!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re reading this, you probably love the Italian language, and maybe you also love old Italian movies, as I do. In this article, I outline certain themes that often appear in movies made from the 1940s through the 1970s, such as language differences; the dichotomy between North and South; emigration; and the post-war economic boom.<\/strong> Often, these themes might pass unnoticed without some understanding of the cultural background. The information I provide here lays the basis for a deeper appreciation of the films. For example, when you see a film where a northerner makes a disparaging remark about a southerner, or where an Italian emigrant misses home, you\u2019ll know that these are themes of Italian life and culture, and not just the experience of a single individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I illustrate the themes with images from some of my favorite Italian films, which include Italian subtitles translated, in some cases, from dialect. I\u2019ve included links to the cineracconti<\/em> (photo-stories) on my blog www.liconoscevobene.net<\/a>, where, if your curiosity is piqued, you can read a narrative of each film, complete with dialogue, scene description, cultural notes, and images. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Language Differences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before the unification of Italy in the mid-1800s, people in the country spoke a wide range of dialects and registers of Italian. <\/strong>Today, the relative isolation that sustained these language differences has gone, but the old forms have persisted somewhat, through custom or pride. Those who speak standard Italian may feel superior to dialect speakers. As we see in the following examples, other effects of this language difference may be confusion and misunderstanding; efforts by dialect speakers to speak a more standard Italian, often portrayed affectionately or for comic effect; and identification with a local region, rather than with Italy as a nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When passengers from Petralia, Carini, and Cinisi introduce themselves, one man says, \u201cWho has ever slept with so many foreigners?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cForeigners? But where are all these foreigners? We\u2019re all Italian here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cItalian?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cAnd what language do you speak?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cDon\u2019t you know that we\u2019re speaking Italian?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      After one worker shares his opinion, Giulio, a union leader says, in frustration, \u201cI don\u2019t know, I didn\u2019t get a fucking thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Cesarina, another leader, replies, \u201cI did understand. It\u2019s Bergamo dialect. My father was from there, poor guy. He proposes that, instead of quitting an hour early, to be united, we all start an hour later tomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      These lines carry a message from Monicelli, the director, about the importance of overcoming language divisions to forge solidarity and about acceptance of Italians who speak different languages or dialects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. In Mafioso<\/em><\/a>, when Nino brings his Northern wife to Sicily to meet his family, his sister Rosalia \u2013 a native Sicilian speaker \u2013 tries to speak standard Italian with her sister-in-law from the north.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Here, Ferdinando corrects his wife Rosalia\u2019s grammar in standard Italian when she doesn\u2019t use the subjunctive. They are Sicilian, but he is more educated. (In fact, many Italians nowadays \u2013 like many English-speakers \u2013 don\u2019t bother with the subjunctive!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. You may also see adults struggling with simple arithmetic. In La ciociara<\/em><\/a>, a young boy asks his dad for help with a math problem. His dad doesn\u2019t have a clue, and his grandma scolds him for even asking.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Grandma (to boy): \u201cWhat are you going to school for? You\u2019re the one who should be teaching us!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            While Italy\u2019s literacy rate climbed postwar, its low rate of functional illiteracy continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Northern Italy \/ Southern Italy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            Given their attitudes to language, northerners sometimes disparage southerners as rural, coarse, and backward, while southerners may regard northerners as pretentious snobs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. In Rocco e i suoi fratelli<\/em><\/a>, Rosaria Parondi, a widow, migrates to Milan from the South with her sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            When the family arrives at their new apartment complex in Milan, the porter directs them to their apartment: \u201cParondi, Parondi, yes, there, it\u2019s over there. There, there, down, down, the basement.\u201d She uses simple words, repeating herself and gesturing, so that the southerners will better understand her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Not everyone is so kind. A few moments later, as the Parondis enter the courtyard, a woman says to the porter, \u201cDid you see that stuff?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cMamma mia! Africa!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cWhere are they from?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cLucania.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cOdd name. Where\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cDown south.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cI see, the land of the idlers!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            To the northerner, the South may seem exotic as Africa: an unknowable place where primitive races live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            2. In Mafioso<\/em><\/a>, Nino, a Sicilian living in Milan, often finds himself acting as an interpreter between the two cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            In this phone conversation, Nino tells his father-in-law, a northerner, about his upcoming family trip back to his hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cNo, don\u2019t worry\u2026 What? Typhus vaccine? Papa, what do you think, that we\u2019re going among the Mau Mau? I\u2019m bringing them to my home!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            3. In I fidanzati<\/em><\/a>, unusually, the migration is from North to South: Giovanni goes from Milan to Sicily for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            On Giovanni\u2019s new assignment, a northern coworker explains the industrial accident that has just occurred in terms of his perceptions of Sicilian culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cThey don\u2019t wear their welder masks… In the early days, when it rained, they wouldn\u2019t come to work\u2026 Here, when it rains, everything stops. They don\u2019t have an industrial mentality and there\u2019s nothing you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Later, another northerner comments, \u201cIt\u2019s not that they\u2019re lazy. They do their work. They\u2019re just a little crazy. The sun\u2019s really hot and they never have a chance to blow off steam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

             4. In L\u2019abbaglio<\/em>, a Sicilian colonel understands cultural subtleties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cDidn\u2019t you understand it? My dear Ragus\u00ecn, now the barons and the mafia have started playing at revolution\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cBut\u2026 it seemed very respectful to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cLieutenant, you are a good officer, but you haven\u2019t understood anything about Sicily.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

             5.  In Salvatore Giuliano<\/em>, about a notorious Sicilian bandit, a journalist from Rome who is reporting on his death tries to get information from people in the village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cYes, that\u2019s it. Where are you from?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cFrom Rome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cWhat could you understand about Sicily?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Later, soldiers from the North go to the Sicilian town of Montelepre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Salvatore Giuliano<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The local Carabinieri marshal advises the northern major that the territory is hostile, but his input is disregarded. Instead, the marshal is ordered to accompany the lieutenant as he seeks local lodgings for the soldiers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The marshal says, \u201cKeep against the wall. It\u2019s safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cDon\u2019t take offense at what the major said. We northerners are out of our element here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cSo are we, and we\u2019re from the town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Needless to say, two soldiers walking in the middle of the street are shot and killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Emigration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            Emigration \u2013 internal and external \u2013 is a common theme in postwar Italian movies set during the Economic boom (see below), a time of social and geographic mobility. <\/strong>The decision to emigrate is rarely easy. It\u2019s a dislocation. It means leaving behind everything that is familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. For southerners, the reasons for leaving are often economic: hardship and poverty. In Rocco e i suoi fratelli<\/em><\/a>, Signora Parondi talks about life in Sicily to her son.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

Is it my fault if I wanted to bring my big, strong, beautiful sons to the city so they could get rich and not be damned on that unrewarding land like their father who died a thousand times before closing his eyes forever? \u2026 Your father couldn\u2019t bring himself to leave the land. But for all the twenty-five years we spent together, I thought of nothing else but this: leaving, leaving, leaving.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              1. Il cammino della speranza<\/em><\/a> is set in a Sicilian village that depends on a sulfur mine. Told that it will close, the miners decide to stay underground until the owners reverse the decision.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                Underground, Saro says: \u201cThey must not close down the mine. It means making us and our families die of hunger. Better to die here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                But the miners ultimately decide it is better to live. A trafficker offers to take the miners and their families to France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                 Saro says: \u201cI\u2019m leaving. I have three children to feed, but it\u2019s not only that. Children grow up and if I\u2019ve had a life of misery, I don’t want them to have one. I want them to be able to work. They have no work here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  \n
                1. Far from home, emigrants, who may never have left their hometown before, encounter locals who may be prejudiced and hostile. They miss their lifelong friends. In La ragazza in vetrina<\/em><\/a>, set in Holland, a Sicilian in the miners\u2019 dormitory is happy when a group of Italians arrives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                  \u201cGood. This way, we can keep each other company. I was beginning to feel a little lonely here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    Arriving in a farmworkers\u2019 dormitory full of northerners, the migrants in Il cammino della speranza<\/em><\/a> <\/em>are greeted with a question: \u201cWhere are you from?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    \u201cFrom Sicily. We are Sicilians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    \u201cThe terroni<\/em> have arrived!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    \u201cWe\u2019re terroni, but you\u2019re polentoni<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    Note that both terms are derogatory: terroni,<\/em> southerners, those who work the land (terra); polentoni,<\/em> northerners, a term derived from polenta, <\/em>cornmeal, eaten mostly in the North. In this case, the terms are used in good humor, but that\u2019s not always the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    5. In <\/em>I compagni<\/em><\/a>, Sicilian worker Arr\u00f2 is regarded as an outsider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    In this scene, Arr\u00f2 calls up to the workers planning a strike. Looking down, one asks unkindly, referring to Arr\u00f2\u2019s dark skin, \u201cWho is that? The Mustaf\u00e0?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    In a later scene, the strike committee visits Arr\u00f2 at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    I compagni <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    When they enter Arr\u00f2\u2019s hut, they\u2019re stunned by the poverty they see: Arr\u00f2 sits on a blanket over the dirt floor; the walls are rotten boards, with rags stuffed between them to block out the cold. The children look miserable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    Scenes like this, showing the harsh conditions that migrants must endure, help us understand the severity of the hardships that drove them from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    6. Sometimes, emigrants may choose to return home, even at the expense of certain urban comforts. In Stromboli, terra di Dio<\/em><\/a>, some of the old-timers on the island have histories less bucolic than an onlooker might assume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    \u201cWe\u2019re half-American \u2013 Strombolians back from America… We were all in New York\u2026. I worked as a dockhand in Brooklyn and I used to make a lot of money. Imagine! On Sundays, we\u2019d go fishing! By car!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    \u201cI\u2019d even drive a car to pick up my relief check. We all drove cars in America!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    \u201cBut we came back to Stromboli.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    \u201cAmerica is good for young people. I\u2019m an old man and I want to die on Stromboli.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    Economic Boom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                    The first wave of emigration, as depicted in Nuovomondo<\/em> (see above), followed Italian unification in the mid-19th century. The second wave took place after World War II during a period known as the \u201cboom\u201d or \u201ceconomic miracle\u201d.<\/strong> The boom created a new middle class with well-paid jobs and consumer goods. For some, it meant upward mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      1. But there\u2019s a darker side to the boom. In Le mani sulla citt\u00e0<\/em>, construction in a densely populated neighborhood of Naples results in the sudden collapse of an adjacent building. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                        Afterwards, accusations fly: real estate speculation, the violation of building codes. The film gives a sharp perspective on the corruption that ensues when city government is enmeshed with private interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        1. When you see construction in a post-war Italian film, even in the background of a shot, it\u2019s likely a symbol of the boom \u2013 and often an unspoken comment on those left behind by the boom.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                          In these images from Le notti di Cabiria<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>Cabiria\u2019s boyfriend steals her pocketbook, she runs to look for her shoe, and local residents try to help her. In the background, in each case, we see new and ongoing construction, a clear statement by the filmmaker that accompanies the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            Ciao a tutti at My Italian Circle! If you\u2019re reading this, you probably love the Italian language, and maybe you also love old Italian movies, as I do. In this article, I outline certain themes that often appear in movies made from the 1940s through the 1970s, such as language differences; the dichotomy between North and South; emigration; and the post-war economic boom. Often, these themes might pass unnoticed without some understanding of the cultural background. The information I provide here lays the basis for a deeper appreciation of the films. For example, when you see a film where a northerner makes a disparaging remark about a southerner, or where an Italian emigrant misses home, you\u2019ll know that these are themes of Italian life and culture, and not just the experience of a single individual. I illustrate the themes with images from some of my favorite Italian films, which include Italian subtitles translated, in some cases, from dialect.
